The piece, written by Defense One's Science & Technology Editor Patrick Tucker, was reported from the Global SOF Indo-Pacific Irregular Warfare Symposium in Honolulu. It examines a challenge raised repeatedly at the event: government and military personnel routinely rely on personal devices and consumer messaging apps, often while working with allied forces over networks the U.S. does not control. Encryption alone can't solve the underlying problem, because it says nothing about whether the person on the other end of the line is actually who they claim to be.
Kibu co-founder Eftychis Gregos Mourginakis told Defense One that this gap has become far more dangerous as AI makes it possible to forge a face or a voice in real time. A military official who tracks adversary disinformation echoed that concern in the article, noting that AI has made deception scalable and that synthetic identities are now convincing enough to fool the people who know the real person best.
The article details how Kibu closes that gap. In addition to end-to-end encryption, Kibu layers in biometric authentication and lets organizations add their own verification requirements. The app avoids traditional credentials (usernames, phone numbers, passwords, etc.), includes duress passcodes for situations where someone is forced to unlock their device, and can be deployed by each organization in its own cloud environment so that its users are fully air-gapped from everyone else. Defense One reports that a small number of U.S. special operators are now testing the platform.
Mourginakis noted that while the military faces the most immediate need for this kind of verification, the same shift is underway for civilians, as people move away from products that monetize their data and toward companies that put privacy and security first.
"The biggest premium service is going to be privacy, trust, security as a service," Mourginakis said.
